Broncos QB competition starts at Week 1 of OTAs, 1-on-1 with rookie Jonathon Cooper and Aaron Rodgers still looming

May 26, 2021

They're back.

The Denver Broncos officially started Week 1 of OTAs on Monday and almost the entire team showed up and was ready to work.

In the latest episode of his podcast Klis' Mike Drop, our 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis starts by discussing the all but two players who were at the UCHealth Training Center for drills and practice this week. Some others were excused due to a variety of ailments.

Mike also discusses the QB competition between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater and notes the Aaron Rodgers saga is still looming for the Broncos and other teams.

Next, Mike goes 1-on-1 with seventh-round draft pick Jonathon Cooper. The interview was taped before Cooper's ablation heart procedure, but they discuss the ailment because it's been something Cooper's had to deal with in the past. Mike thinks it could be a "red-shirt" year for Cooper and he might be on Denver's practice squad.

Mike then wraps up by discussing the early part of the Broncos schedule, and does think head coach Vic Fangio's seat could be a little warm if Denver doesn't get off to a faster start this season.

Broncos enter Phase II of workouts with improved attendance, 1-on-1 with rookies Javonte Williams and Baron Browning

Broncos enter Phase II of workouts with improved attendance, 1-on-1 with rookies Javonte Williams and Baron Browning

May 19, 2021

In the latest episode of his podcast Klis' Mike Drop, our 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis starts by discussing the much-improved attendance for the team at Phase II of offseason workouts, as more than 70 players (including rookies) showed up at UCHealth Training Center this week.

Next, Mike goes 1-on-1 with second-round running back Javonte Williams out of North Carolina. They discuss Willams' impressive pre-draft test scores, family and parents, running style and his fresh legs after splitting reps at UNC.

Finally, it's a chat with Broncos third-round linebacker Baron Browning out of Ohio State. A lot of people wanted Denver to get inside linebacker help earlier in the draft, but Browning could be a steal considering they took him with the No. 105 overall pick.

Mike then wraps up by discussing the recent diversity hires the Broncos have made in the front office, including six recent ones, headlined by Kelly Kleine being named Director of Football Operations/Special Advisor to the GM. It's believed Kleine is the highest-ranking female executive in the NFL.

1-on-1 with Broncos No. 9 overall pick Pat Surtain II, GM George Paton and head coach Vic Fangio

1-on-1 with Broncos No. 9 overall pick Pat Surtain II, GM George Paton and head coach Vic Fangio

May 2, 2021

In the latest episode of his podcast Klis' Mike Drop, our 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis starts off by recapping Denver's draft, including the decision to go with Alabama cornerback Pat Surtain II with the No. 9 overall pick. It was a controversial one with QBs Justin Fields and Mac Jones still on the board, but obviously that's not Surtain's fault. Mike sat down with the rookie for an exclusive interview.

Next, Mike goes 1-on-1 with the man behind the team's draft decisions in general manager George Paton. It was Paton's first time being in charge of an NFL Draft and he stuck to his board. Mike dives into his thinking.

Finally, it's a chat with Broncos head coach Vic Fangio. Mike asks him where Aaron Rodgers is after rumors swirled Denver could acquire the reigning MVP on Thursday night. Fangio simply responds with "who?" and then dryly tells Mikes "next question."

Mike then wraps up Denver's entire draft class and looks ahead to what a QB competition in training camp between Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock might look like. It's a loaded podcast with three great interviews!

Offseason: 1-on-1 with Hall of Fame and former Broncos QB Peyton Manning, plus hear from Canton-bound John Lynch

February 9, 2021

Super Bowl LV was kind of a dud.

Unless, of course, you were a Denver Broncos fan cheering against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the latest episode of his podcast Klis' Mike Drop, our 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis starts off by recapping the big game. It was one that turned into a nightmare for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs and a 7th Super Bowl title for Tom Brady. Mike said last week the Chiefs "JV offensive line" would have trouble with the Bucs pass-rush and boy did they ever.

Next, a real treat, as Mike landed a 1-on-1 interview with former Broncos QB and now Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. Mike and Manning go back a long time, particularly during the four years Mike covered him in Denver. They discuss everything from how he received the news he'd be heading to Canton, his bitter defeat in Super Bowl XLVIII to the Seahawks and capturing Super Bowl 50 to end his career.

Offseason: Super Bowl LV, 1-on-1 with Bucs center Ryan Jensen and more

February 3, 2021

The Denver Broncos aren't playing in Super Bowl LV, but you already knew that.

In this week's edition of Klis' Mike Drop, our 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis previews the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mike sees a serious advantage for the Bucs defensive line against a depleted Chiefs offensive line.

Next, Mike welcomes Tampa Bay center Ryan Jensen to the podcast. Jensen is a Colorado native who played high school football at Fort Morgan and college football at CSU-Pueblo. Now, he's snapping the ball to Tom Brady in the biggest game of his life on Sunday.

Finally, Mike dives into the Broncos QB situation after the team missed out on trading for Matthew Stafford. The former Lions quarterback was moved for Jared Goff and draft picks to the Los Angeles Rams. Mike thinks Denver will now pursue Texans QB Deshaun Watson, but doesn't give them great odds of landing the superstar.

Offseason: Could the Broncos make a play for Deshaun Watson?

Offseason: Could the Broncos make a play for Deshaun Watson?

January 20, 2021

This week the team introduced new general manager George Paton. 9NEWS insider Mike Klis sits down for an exclusive interview to get to know Denver's new man in charge on his latest podcast.

Mike also discusses the Broncos' quarterback situation with Drew Lock, and if the team should pursue disgruntled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson in the latest Klis' Mike Drop. Mike suggests it would take a trade package of Drew Lock and Jerry Jeudy or Noah Fant or Dre'Mont Jones plus several draft picks to get it done.

He also digs into the topic of Denver's veteran defense, which is likely to see changes coming soon.

Mike then has consecutive 1-on-1 interviews with Denver's three top bosses, starting with Elway. Next it's a conversation with President and CEO Joe Ellis, followed by a chat with head coach Vic Fangio.

Finally, to wrap things up, Mike goes more in depth on the five options to be the next GM and looks ahead to what that will mean for the Broncos in 2021, including the fate of starting QB Drew Lock.
